The stone takes its name from the Greek lapis nephriticus (literally "kidney stone") and was, accordingly, once believed to be a cure for (you guessed it) kidney stones. I'm not certain if it's an example of (quite excellent) 19th century humour, or whether it really was made and worn to help with someone's ailing kidneys Surely the fact this
